Jason Wright to Transition from Washington Commanders Leadership Role in 2024

Jason Wright, the groundbreaking executive who led the Washington Commanders through a period of significant transformation, will transition from his current role following the 2024 season. Wright is slated to assume the position of senior adviser, focusing on ensuring the completion of the Commanders' new stadium deal.

Transformative Tenure

Wright began his journey with the Commanders in 2020, back when the franchise was known as the Washington Football Team. His leadership was pivotal during a tumultuous period for the organization, which culminated in a rebranding effort in 2022. The team officially adopted the Washington Commanders name under Wright’s stewardship, signaling a fresh era for the franchise.

The organization also experienced a notable change in ownership during Wright’s tenure. Dan Snyder, the previous owner, handed the reins over to Josh Harris. This transition marked a significant shift in the team's direction and culture, aiming to rebuild its image both on and off the field.

A Legacy of Firsts

Wright’s appointment as the team president was historic; he became the first Black president of an NFL team. Additionally, he is only the fourth former player to take on such a pivotal executive role within the league. These milestones highlight the progressive steps the NFL is making towards diversity and inclusion in its leadership ranks.

Reflecting on his tenure, Wright expressed immense pride in the accomplishments achieved over the past four years. "I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished over the past four years. Together with an amazing team of professionals, we have taken this franchise through a period of immense challenge and uncertainty and have transformed it. We've set the table for an incredibly bright future under Josh's leadership," Wright said.

Reconnecting with the Community

Under Wright's direction, the Commanders saw a resurgence in fan engagement. The organization welcomed record numbers of fans back into their stadium, enhanced the overall fan experience, and successfully re-engaged with corporate partners. Wright's efforts also included reconnecting the team with the local community, fostering a culture of respect and inclusiveness within the organization.

Echoing his dedication to these efforts, Wright stated, "Over just the past year, we've welcomed record numbers of fans back into our building, made meaningful improvements to the fan experience, re-engaged with corporate partners, and reconnected with the community. Most importantly, we re-established a culture of respect in this organization."

Future Prospects

Wright’s forthcoming role as a senior adviser will keep him with the Commanders through the 2024-2025 season. His primary focus will be on completing the stadium deal, a critical component of the franchise's long-term plans. "Given all those accomplishments, that's why I am proud to announce I will remain with the team throughout the 2024-2025 season, with the same responsibilities. In particular, I look forward to helping the organization complete its new stadium deal," Wright emphasized.

As Wright prepares for his next chapter, he has been shortlisted as a finalist for the position of president with the Green Bay Packers. This opportunity underscores the high regard in which he is held within the NFL community and his proven track record of leadership and vision.

Reflecting on the transition, Wright shared, "This feels like the right moment for me to explore my next leadership opportunity. I'm extremely grateful to my Commanders colleagues, our fans, and this community for all that we have accomplished these past four years, and am looking forward to the start of a very successful season for the Burgundy and Gold."

Wright’s departure marks the end of a pivotal chapter for the Washington Commanders. As the organization looks ahead, it does so on a foundation of renewed optimism and a promising future, thanks in large part to Wright’s transformative leadership.
